National Non-Toxic Printmaking Invitational

Non-Toxic Intaglio Type

Non-Toxic Intaglio-Type encompasses a whole range of techniques that do not rely on traditional toxic materials. The techniques for making whites and blacks on the metal or plexi plate do not cause indentations in the plate, so plates can be re-cycled. Another advantage is that plates can be re-worked multiple times with the same or other non-toxic techniques to produce a whole range of different images with one plate in a short amount of time. The most significant development in this new field is a photo-polymer (i.e., light-sensitive) film, originally designed by Dupont for computer chips, that can be laminated to a metal or plexi plate, exposed to light with a stencil, and developed in a dilute soda ash solution; this permits photographs, hand-drawn images, or other stencils on mylar or transparencies to be printed. Photo-based Intaglio-Type is often combined with other Non-Toxic Intaglio-Type Techniques. Keith Howard, who began experimenting with non-toxic printmaking in 1996, is the foremost developer of Non-Toxic Intaglio-Type techniques. The recent non-toxic developments spurred by the work of Keith Howard have opened up whole new opportunities for investigation and revitalized printmaking. The work in this exhibit results directly or indirectly from his teaching and books.
